Copemish is located in the northeast corner of Manistee County. The name is Indian for "big beech," and refers to the idea of holding council under a big beech tree. The Buckley/Douglass Lumber Co. came into the area in 1883 with the first trains coming through soon after in 1889. It was organized as a village in 1891.
